We had an interesting visit to Hay castle, parts of which date from the early 12 century. We actually visited to eat at the cafe which was very busy with lots of people, some with their dogs. Very nice coffee and snacks with enthusiastic young staff to serve. A
There is also a well stocked shop with souvenirs from Hay as well as Welsh related items.
We went for a mooch as we were in Hay for something else. Castle grounds are lovely, loads of native trees to hug, a favourite with both me and the boys. The castle itself resembles more of an old Manor house than a castle, but is quite imposing looking, being slap bang in the centre of Hay.
£5pp entry, with free return for a year, if you keep the receipt!
Very clean ,fresh lines where the new meets the old. Not very castle like, more an art installation. Have to say the floor to ceiling animation in the dungeon describing the history of the place was amazing. It was the quietest I had ever seen the two boys! The boys also liked the dressing up area- all the period clothes have been made by volunteers and there were crowns and helmets and full length mirrors to preen in!
Most enjoyed by me was the King of Hays room with his spinning decision maker. Brilliant idea, the present government and its opposition could learn a thing or two from him!
Books to buy in the grounds at a £1 a book and an honesty box. Fabulous.
Tea room was a bit on the expensive side, but then Hay is incredibly expensive anyway.
Well worth a fiver. Kept the kids entertained on a wet day.
Interesting heritage of the castle. There isn’t a lot to see and explore but there are some great views. Much of the main building now houses exhibitions, shop and tea-room.
Great castle for a quick walk. Remember to visit the first honest bookshop. £1 for each book!

Really fascinating place with a community buzz about it. Interesting history, very clever projections of that history in the lower floor. Good gallery space with a thought provoking exhibition and of course a super cafe and shop.
Dominating Hay on Wye the castle has been a ruin, which you couldn,t visit, for many years. Substantial recent I vestments has led to the sympathetic restoration of many areas including a new staircase. Views are impressive. The new cafe is free to enter and is excellent and the £5 fee to explore the castle is a bargain.
Best Bakewell slices!!! Only visited the Hay Castle café today. It's totally dog friendly. Lovely selection of cakes and brunches/lunches. Staff are helpful and friendly. Looking forward to visiting again
The most wonderful visit to Hay Castle.
Beautifully restored and tastefully curated.
A wonderful balance of indoor, outdoor spaces, history and present, arts and literature. Very impressively interpreted for children and adults alike. Beautiful views from the top amongst the trills of cooing doves.
Lovely clean facilities, delightful shop and delicious food in the cafe. Staff were very engaging and welcoming.
The cost of entry at £5 pp is well justified, covering the cost of two art exhibitions, the interior and exterior of the castle, and its history. Plus, it includes free return for a year!
